A successful tour was organised by V.I.D.A. in the neighbourhood of the machine shops of Piraeus, in the streets where the industrial heart of the port was beating since the end of the 19th century. Those, who have followed us in the past on our various tours, know that the buildings we walk by do not have the architectural beauty e.g. of neoclassical or the glamour of ancient monuments. They hide the dark side of the abandoned, the dirty, the dangerous, the empty, the silent, the forgotten but at the same time they bring forth a bright side, that of the pride of work, of the glorious industrial past, when they were buzzing with workers' voices and the noise of machines. We wanted to highlight these two sides with our tour of the famous machine shops of Piraeus and through the stories of Mrs. Maria Mavroidi, Ph.D., Historical-Industrial Archaeologist, and Mrs. Maria Daniel, Ph.D. architect-engineer, we listened to their sounds and learned their story.
It was a great pleasure and honour for us to be together with the tour participants in the streets of these old metallic sounds.
